The PureONE only needs to be cleaned out once or twice a year. No parts, hoses, o-rings, or gaskets need to be replaced during this procedure, though some users do prefer to replace their hoses as a precaution.
Safety first:
Wear safety goggles and gloves. Keep a damp cloth on hand to wipe up any spills, and keep a spray bottle of vinegar nearby to neutralize any lye spills. Only use exceptionally clean equipment (no soap, no oil) to avoid contamination.
Step 1 — Empty the lye solution:
- Pour out the lye solution. Daily Hydrogen recommends replacing the lye solution annually.
- If you are disposing of the lye solution: if you’re on sewage, pour the lye solution down the drain. If you’re on septic, neutralize the lye solution with vinegar first — keep adding vinegar and mixing until it stops reacting. This makes it safe for septic.
- If you are reusing the lye solution: pour it into a very clean glass container and cover with a lid or plate. The particulates will gradually settle out of solution, at which point you can pour off the clarified lye solution back into your PureONE.
- When emptying the lye out of your PureONE, tip it forward and backward while it’s upside down to get every bit of lye out.
Step 2 — Rinse:
- After emptying, fill your PureONE with 4-5 cups of your hottest tap water.
- Tip your PureONE 45° forward for 5-10 seconds, then tip it backward the same amount for 5-10 seconds.
- Repeat this back-and-forth for 30-60 seconds as the rinse water cools.
- Drain the water and repeat the rinsing process 3-5 times, or until the water comes out clean.
Step 3 — Refill:
After draining the last drops of rinse water, your PureONE is ready to be refilled with lye solution and set back up.
