How dangerous is the lye (sodium hydroxide) used in the system?

Last updated: April 27, 2026

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH/lye) is highly caustic and requires extreme caution. It can cause severe chemical burns on contact with skin or eyes. Daily Hydrogen provides detailed safety instructions for handling. Always wear protective equipment, work in well-ventilated areas, and keep water readily available for emergency flushing. Never allow children or pets near lye. Store in sealed containers away from moisture. In case of contact, flush immediately with large amounts of water and seek medical attention. With proper precautions, lye can be handled safely.
